‘My Computer’ has been the most frequently used icon on the desktop of Windows PC. Unfortunately, it is not shown by default in the latest version of Windows 8 and 8.1. These operating systems are optimized for touch screens, and carry interfaces similar to those of tablets. Even though you can easily boot Windows 8.1 directly into desktop mode, but it will still not show ‘My Computer’ on the desktop. This guide provides simple and efficient way to show ‘My Computer’ on the desktop in Windows 8 and 8.1.

In previous versions of operating systems, you could show My Computer by going to start menu and then checking the option of “Show on Desktop” for My Computer. But the traditional start menu is also missing in these latest versions of operating systems. Therefore, the option of “Show on Desktop” won’t work here.

Having My Computer on the desktop will make accessing disk partitions, folders, device manager and properties quite comfortable.

Click on the Desktop tile present in Metro UI that will bring normal desktop for you.

You need to Right-click on the blank space and choose ‘Personalize’.

Click on ‘Change desktop icons’ in the screen to follow. Choose the icons that you want to show on your desktop. When you check the ‘Computer’, it will show the My Computer icon. You may also put some other icons on the desktop if you desire.
