Meet Roderick Scott Editor-In-Chief/Publisher at TechGuySmartBuy.comMeet Roderick Scott Editor-In-Chief/Publisher at TechGuySmartBuy.comTGSB professional essexFor those of you who like to be always ahead with the latest technology and gizmos news, then you definitely must have visited or at the very least heard of TechGuySmartBuy.com. Today, in yet another Innov8tiv Magazine exclusive interview, we get up close and personal with the man who makes it all possible. The following is our exclusive interview with the Editor-In-Chief of TechGuySmartBuy.com Roderick Scott.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Roderick Scott and I am the Editor-In-Chief/Publisher over at TechGuySmartBuy.com. I have been running all of the day-to-day operations along with content & video for the site since 2010.  Prior to the site’s inception, I have been interested in all things electronic as far back as I can remember.  I studied Graphic Design in high school and then Communications briefly at William Paterson University.

TechGuySmartBuy or TGSB for short was started back in late 2008 with my co-founder Levon Myles as hobby.  We felt the need to create a consumer electronics site for the everyday person.  Many of the popular ones at the time were catering to techies and leaving the rest of the public left to decipher.  At TGSB we craft our content for all to understand and get informed on the latest news, reviews, tips, and deals.

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career.

My biggest accomplishment thus far was getting sourced from a few mainstream tech sites like Techmeme, The Verge, & The Wirecutter to name a few.  Since it’s such a crowded space and starting off, there’s always a bit of uncertainty of reaching people.  These were definitely viewed as validations of doing a good job.  These moments inspire me to work harder and smarter to continue to reach more consumers.

What was the most difficult period in your career life, and how did you deal with it?

The most difficult period in my career has been when I was laid off from my job back in several years ago and went from job-to-job to figure out where I wanted to go or wanted to do.  When the rent is due, you don’t have time to be indecisive in job/career choices.  Going from the post office to collections to customer service jobs until I landed at my current job at ADP.  Working there has allowed me the flexibility to start and pursue TGSB.

What is your career advice to college students entering the Technology Industry?

My advice to college students looking to get into the tech industry is to have an idea of what area of interest you would like to enter:

  • Do as much research on that area as possible to see if this is truly something you want to make a career out of.
  • If you don’t know anyone within your network to get a foot in the door, start attending local meetups via Meetup.com.  You’ll definitely find some like-minded individuals to collaborate with and learn from.
  • Please complete your internships – especially if you don’t have much of a network or not.  It is the more traditional way to get your foot in the door.
  • If all else fails, create your product (whether it is an app, product, or service) nothing beats creating a viable and working product on a resume.  Test your product and get beta users properly before launch.  Who knows?  You can be the next big thing like Dropbox, Facebook, or Instagram.
